In Appreciation to Flying Lead Change

By Kelly Wendorf

“The way we live, love and connect changes the course of everything in our lives.”

I was drawn to Wendorf’s work, having worked closely with Janis Cooper around somatic practices and the gift a horse brings to our own inner awareness.  Kelly helps us discover a new approach to leading and living through 7 Core Principles that are grounded in neuroscience and profound sources of wisdom. care, presence, safety, connection, peace, freedom and joy.  This is in contrast to leading by dominance or coercion.

As a somatic practitioner I understand these principles are embodied through creative form, and intuitive understanding.  Flying Lead Change in horsemanship, Wendorf explains, is what “allows a running horse to respond with breathtaking grace to changing conditions.”  This metaphor fits beautifully for the people I encounter that are doing their inner work.

Resilience is being able to be present, face changing and trying circumstances, from a place of unshakable knowing that it will be okay in the end.

So many people I encounter in my practice help me to know that we can withstand life, death, divorce, infidelity, multiple surgeries, the loss of a home, and illness, and rise above the tides to transform and grow beyond our pain, grief, anxiety, depressed states, and conflicted relationships.

The ingredient to finding our way back home, is often to know we are lost.  In Wendorf’s case, she found her way to the billabong, with Uncle Bob, in the bush of Australia – when her life was unraveling after a miscarriage, divorce, and ultimate loss of her livelihood.  There she attuned with the wild herd, who reminded her of her lost-ness, while connecting her to the great wisdom that lies within.
