Trauma Informed Approaches
Foundations that make a difference
Trauma is complex. We all have our own unique triggers, and as discussed in the previous blog, we don’t always identify or feel like our lives could have had traumatic effects. Learning about our own journey with trauma is a process of self discovery and self agency. Practicing bottom up approaches, means we show reverence to the body’s information, and assists us to integrate body awareness and new neuroconnections in a safe and kind way.
Somatic therapy refers to body sensations and discoveries as the predominant emphasis for healing at a deep cellular level.
Some foundations to practicing from a trauma informed somatic lense:
We talk about safety from the beginning: physical safety, emotional safety, and creating a safe environment where healing can occur.
We talk about self-care, boundaries, grounding and resourcing.
Our approach recognizes that our behavior isn’t who you are—rather that it makes sense based on your history. We adapted and behaviors occurred to benefit this adaptation at a given time.
We work to understand our coping skills, how we survived our experiences, and help us build new healthy coping skills.
We move at a pace that you are comfortable with, collaborating with you along the way, and work to keep you within your window of tolerance of emotions.
We are able to find safety and trust in our inner awareness, when we fine tune and discover what is held and housed inside our bodies from a place of trust in ourselves as our greatest teachers. Our body has been with us our whole life, and our body wisdom is a super power to greater growth and supportive change.
