The Art of Unplugging: Finding Sanctuary in a World Obsessed with Productivity
Part 1: The Power of Deep Rest and the Neuroscience of Restorative Practices
While driving around Kittery, Maine, I spotted a sign for a new yoga studio opening up. It read, "Yoga is not about touching your toes...it's about the journey on the way there." I've noticed that many people have preconceived notions about yoga, usually focusing on reasons why it's not right for them. The most common excuse I hear is, "I can't touch my toes."
This resistance to yoga always piqued my curiosity about the human mind and our long-held beliefs, particularly regarding our bodies and yoga.
In the coming month, I'll be offering a blog series that explores one essential practice: rest. Although our blog will emphasize deep rest practices, we'll also examine the spectrum of rest practices, from Savasana and restorative yoga to yin yoga and our primary focus, Yoga Nidra.
So, why is rest so important?
The answer is simple. We live in a culture plagued by depletion on multiple levels: physical, mental, and spiritual. More than ever, we need effective, rejuvenating, restorative practices that nourish our bodies.
But what does depletion look like?
Consider athletes and high-performing professionals who push themselves to their limits. They often experience physical exhaustion, mental burnout, and emotional strain due to intense training or high-pressure work environments. What about mothers/fathers who work 9-5 and come home and multitask their way through preparing dinner and precious bedtime routines? A lack of restorative practices can lead to chronic fatigue, compromised immune systems, and a decline in overall performance period.
Yoga has a longstanding, ancient connection to practices that restore our well-being and help us recover from the demands of our fast-paced society.
It's not just about touching our toes; it's more than a journey.
Yoga is a deep understanding of well-being and self-care.
A committed practice offers countless benefits.
