Unraveling the Power of Crystals: A Journey Through History, Science, and Personal Discovery (Part 1)

Crystals are gaining popularity again. When I grew up they were definitely seen as “wu-wu” or “out there” even though my grandfather had a collection that I would admire and was forbidden to touch. Maybe this made them even more attractive to me.

Over the years, my attraction to the crystals and stones grew and I began to work with them on a personal and professional level.

In this blog, we will explore the history and science behind crystals; how crystals work; how I discovered crystals and acupuncture and a little about how you can discover them for yourself.

Mankind has been using crystals for as long as our recorded history. Cleopatra used to line her eyelids with malachite and chrysocolla. As well she gifted diplomats from other countries gems. The Bible in Exodus states that Aaron’s breastplate held 12 gems. Native Americans have used turquoise for protection. Crystals were used as talismans for soldiers going into battle or sailors going off to sea for protection. Alexander the Great was said to have chrysoprase on his breastplate and won every battle until the chrysoprase fell off. For centuries women have worn jewelry made of gemstones - whether it be a beautiful  deep orange of carnelian or the brilliance of a diamond. Whether they were worn for their healing properties or not is unknown, but that doesn’t stop crystals from doing their magic.

If you have held or worked with a crystal with intention, you most probably have felt a shift in your own energy.

Whether you consider it magic or science is up to the believer. However, there is science to prove that crystals do conduct energy. Quartz crystals, for example, are highly piezoelectric. This means that under pressure a quartz crystal will emit a current that is a precise and constant frequency making them quite popular in the mechanics of watches, radios and computers. The family of quartzes are made of Silicon Dioxide - hence “Silicon Valley”. Some crystals are pyroelectric and respond to changes in temperature by emitting an electrical current. How cool is that? Something that appears to be so stable and fixed produces energy.

On the more magical side or “wu” perspective of how crystals work, it is all about the connection and intention. Did you know that in Ancient China a “Wu” was a woman that was a healer and had direct divination with plants, crystals and animals? It was a healing woman! We can look at crystals from the perspective of color therapy - the black and reds more grounding, the oranges about creativity, fertility, energy; yellows about abundance, will, and self-empowerment; pinks and greens connect to the heart; blues are soothing and relate to the throat and communication; purples are fulfillment of our hearts desires and the whites are spirituality and clarity. The crystals to a “Wu” are beings. We interact with all beings on this planet and the more that we connect to the crystal world and mother nature around us the stronger and more powerful they are to work with.
