Discovering Escalante: A Hidden Gem in San Jose, Costa Rica
I had returned to Costa Rica after a yoga retreat for a non-typical reason—to help my daughter and support her during some challenging dental work. Unsatisfied with the cost and quality of care from her dentist in the United States, she had done her research and found the best possible healthcare in Costa Rica. So off we went, back to Costa Rica, ready to explore Escalante.
Exploring Escalante
Nestled in the heart of San Jose, Escalante beckons with its vibrant energy and eclectic charm. From quaint cafes serving freshly brewed coffee to lively music venues pulsating with rhythm, every corner of this district exudes a sense of adventure. During our week-long stay for my daughter's dental procedure, we found Escalante to be a delightful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the capital city.
We didn't need a car, as there were plenty of restaurants, food trucks, and a variety of cuisines to try. One of our highlights was visiting the beautiful Butterfly Garden and the El Arca, both accessible via a short Uber ride. These spots provided some of the best moments of our trip, offering a serene escape into nature.
A culinary gem we discovered was Bistro L'Avenue, a French restaurant on the outskirts of Escalante. We dined there four times, enjoying breakfast, lunch, and dinner, always receiving excellent service in an uncrowded, pleasant atmosphere.
A Different Kind of Adventure
Our visit to Costa Rica was anchored by the purpose of my daughter's dental procedure, but it also became an opportunity to discover beauty in unexpected places. As we navigated through San Jose, we embraced the serendipity of travel, where even the most mundane moments can spark joy and wonder.

I highly recommend staying in Escalante for your arrival or departure from Costa Rica. It offers a unique, off-the-beaten-path feel, with cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops to explore and enjoy.
